Sunday, Sep 17. 9am – 12 noon.

Don’t miss it!  Come out and celebrate the start of the school year, listen to some bluegrass music and catch up with old friends and new. If you’re training for the Fallfest 5K, it’s the perfect breakfast after your early Sunday training run. Enjoy a plate of made-from-scratch buttermilk, blueberry, chocolate chip, or oatmeal pancakes, plus sausage, bacon, fresh fruit and Peet’s coffee, all prepared by the Beach Dads Club.

We will have Beach gear available, and the return of the PancakeBot courtesy of the Piedmont Makers, where you can 3d print your favorite historical figure in edible pancake form.

The Beach Dads Club gratefully thanks our many community supporters: Pancake ingredients are generously donated by Mulberry’s Market, bacon & sausage from the Piedmont Grocery, fresh fruit and orange juice from Montclair’s Village Market, coffee from Peet’s on Piedmont Avenue, and of course the Piedmont Post.

Tickets can be purchased at the event, $10 for adults and $5 for kids and seniors, or in advance for the line adverse, on Eventbrite at  http://bit.ly/BeachPancakes

Breakfast is followed by the Chalk Art Fair sponsored by PAINTS, where kids and adults can purchase chalk and a square on the play yard to decorate and enjoy. The event often draws PIXAR and other local artists as well as the kid’s drawings. Funds from the Chalk Art festival support art programs in the Piedmont schools.

Battle of the Bands 6

The Beach Dads Club 6th Annual Battle of the Bands will be Friday, February 10 at the New Parish in Oakland. One of the best nights out of the year. Low key. High energy. Great music, makes one realize how much amazing musical talent we have in the Beach community. Nice way to hang out with some really fun folks and raise money for Beach Elementary. Doesn’t get much better.

The event: Adults 21 and older only. Tickets $25.
Best deal is to buy tickets ahead at http:bit.ly/battleofthebands6

Opening up the evening, Lucy’s Home Alone, a high school and middle school band made up of Beach alums Rachel Barton, Will and Paul Davies, Ellington Davis and Noah Rosenbaum will play a mix of soulful originals combined with classic and contemporary pop hits. Last year they brought the house down and raised the musical ante.

Then the Battle will begin when last year’s King of Padres, Brian Weiss and Tammy’s Camaro, light up the stage with a dance-worthy set of Rock, Pop, Alternative and Funk hits, b-sides and pretty much anything they think is cool from the 70’s up through today.  Next up, the Puckett Family Project, featuring Tod Puckett (Sophia, 2nd grade, Macy and Ella, 5th grade) will fire up a plugged-in, rocking mix of funk and countrified rock originals. To close the evening,Mercy, Mercy, Mercy!, a four-piece band featuring Aaron Fisher  (Wyatt, 5th Grade, Duncan 2nd, Milo, K)  will play a rousing set  rooted in an early-70’s rock sensibility, featuring songs from Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, the Meters, and more.

Call the babysitters now. If you’ve never been before, ask someone who went last year. You won’t want to miss it!

Save the Date! April 19: Garden Party + some serious building

March 21, 2015 Leave a comment

As part of a twice annual Beach grounds and garden work day to keep our school in top shape, we have an important date coming up Sunday, April 19, 9am to 1pm. Please join the padres, madres, neighbors, and ninos for a major work day to build enhancements in the lunch area and Howard fence edge. We are re-vegetating slopes with drought tolerant plants and (fire up that skill saw…) building a deck under the shade tree. This work is all in advance of a new shade structure to be built after school lets out in June.

On the building front: We need two or more dads to step up in to help John Gibbs with prep planning, logistics, and ideally, carpentry on the big day. Gibbs is buying the beer. Big shout out to the Davies and Davis gents for work done to date. Thanks to several other parents, BPO, and Principal Corritone for helping to provide permanent shade in the lunch area.

More details to follow.

December events – Tech Social (12/5), 2nd Thursday BDC Meeting (12/11)

December 5, 2014 Leave a comment

Hola Padres,

A few quick reminders, as we start into December.

First Friday:

Tech Social at Piedmont Middle School, tonight Fri, Dec 5.

Please join the Piedmont Makers for the December Tech Social, 12/05 at the PMS Multipurpose Room at 6pm (cost: $5)! The theme is “Coding” in honor of the Hour of Code week from December 8-14. The featured speaker will be Ali Partovi, Co-Founder of Code.org, and we welcome community members who would like to demonstrate their favorite coding apps. The event will include social time, a pizza dinner, a short TEDx-like talk, and self-organizing pods with topics such as Minecraft, board games, wearables, and any other topics you would like to share! For those of you who weren’t there last month, this is a great event for parents and kids – lots of hands on activities.

Please contact Ayyana Chakravartula (ayyanac@gmail.com), Dion Lim (dionlim@gmail.com) or Noelle Fillippenko (noelle.fillippenko@gmail.com) with questions, and register here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/piedmont-tech-social-december-tickets-14467804593.

Second Thursday:

Beach Dads Club Meeting: Thursday, December 11 at b8am
We’ll hold this month’s Second Thursday meeting at Cato’s on Piedmont Ave, from 8pm – 9:30 (or so). On the agenda will be a short update on the Battle of the Bands (venue and date change) and other dads club related topics. These monthly meetings are meant to be informal get togethers – a great way to meet some other dads, especially those outside of the immediate orbit of what grade your kids are in.

Hope to see you at either or both events.

Viva los padres,

Jon
